LA CONFIDENTIAL is one of my top-top crime movies. It is on Michael's list and on mine. My friend and Hawaii movie critic, Terry Hunter, summerizes my feelings about this movie perfectly (so nice when that happens):
LA CONFIDENTIAL is a terrific film noir set in the 1950's. Corruption inside and outside of the police department dominates the great story. The acting is terrific--Kim Basinger won a best supporting actress Oscar--and the smart, intricate script is completely absorbing. We get to see behind the sleazy glamour of Hollywood in an era that is long gone. Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, and Kevin Spacey play unforgettable characters. There's plenty of sex and violence, but none of it is gratuitous. Every year should produce a movie this fascinating.
YEAH! Have you seen it? Do you agree?

I named it in my comments to Rita! Great film. One of the few I don't mind seeing again.

It was a stylistic tour-de-force! That director's previous movie, The River Wild was also one of my favorite suspense/crime thrillers.
And I much prefer its ending to The Usual Suspects, which always felt a bit gimmicky to me.

I liked Unusual Suspects, but knew who "did it" as soon as I spotted the person! I so agree the ending was gimmicky. Thanks Terry for mentioning the film again. It's worth it!

LA Confidential is one of the best films ever! I've heard that in the original ending a major character died, but it tested so poorly with audiences that the director shot another ending.

After reading all these raves, I'm going to have to add LA Confidential to my viewing list. I can't believe I didn't see it when it came out. Ah well! Gonna break out Netflix and popcorn for this one! :-)
