No, not Steven King or even those lovely gothic books like THE LADY IN WHITE. I think slasher movies are disgusting but not frightening. I do still get a bit shivery when I see the wonderful 1944 THE UNINVITED, based on a book by Dorothy Macardle. In it the ghost is rarely seen and the suspense and unravelling of the story are properly literary. I recommend both.
In horror/ghost genres, the suspense is critical and, as a writer, I find suspense difficult to maintain.
The books that really give me goosebumps are the dystopias. I still have nightmares about 1984. Books in which the monster is disguised as a kindly philanthropist are terrifying, especially when the also hold the power.
Ooh, bit of a frisson there.
Of course everyone has a different trigger for terror. There are those who would run the other way at top speed if appreached by this group.
