I read a lot and I read widely, mostly mysteries because that's what I write. (Goes without saying that I love the books written by my fellow Lady Killers). I really hate questions about favorite books or
favorite authors because I get something from every book and every author, even the ones I don't like. For reasons I can't explain, none of the books I selected are mysteries, except, maybe, Gilly
Macmillan's. If you've read any of these books, would they be on your list of favs? Leave a comment, let me know what you think.
The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin
What She Knew by Gilly Macmillan
The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson
Lucky Us by Amy Bloom
The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson
"Devil in the White City" is one of my favorites. Along the same lines is "Killer of Little Shepherds," by Douglas Starr. Like "Devil . .." he combines true crime with history, in this case history of forensics.

I've been meaning to read Larson's book for the longest time, but it keeps getting shuffled to the bottom of my "to read" pile for some reason. I'm not familiar with any of the others you mentioned, but your recommendation goes a long way with me, Ellen.

I'm not familiar with those you listed, but I've been meaning to widen my reading interests. I might start with "Devil in the White City" because Camille recommended it.

"Devil in the White City" is a long-time favorite of mine. I read it quite a few years ago and it remains strong in my memory. I highly recommend it to those of you who haven't read it yet.
